SUNDAY CANDY

Welcome to Sunday Candy, a limited series podcast hosted by Sheryl Evans Davis. Sunday Candy represents a chance to remember the sweetness and strength of community and lift up the lessons and love of our ancestors.

There was a period in American history when Black people were not allowed to read or gather together; fear of slave rebellions created laws and rules that banned Blacks from learning how to read, playing the drums or even coming together in groups. During the era of Jim Crow and segregation, Sundays and community were critical to the education and development of Black communities. Sunday gatherings were about more than religion; it represented an opportunity to celebrate community, share culture and find creative ways to teach and learn important skills. Many people remember the sustaining candy carried in purses on Sunday, but for some the Sunday Candy was in being together, celebrating culture and building power.

For Sheryl, church on Sundays was, and is, about culture, education, self-care and spirituality.  Sunday Candy aims to create space for the community reflected in the long Sunday services that got her through life.
